 BURJ AL ARAB, DUBAI

One of the most instantly recognizable hotels in the world, the iconic Burj Al Arab tower rises 321 metres above Jumeirah Beach Hotel and Wild Wadi Water Park. This unique sail-shaped building is situated on a man-made island some 280m offshore, linked to the mainland by a curving causeway.

An engineering masterpiece on many levels - the facade in particular represented an astonishing technical challenge, featuring a double-skinned Teflon-coated woven glass fibre screen - it is the first time such technology has been used vertically in such form and extent in any building worldwide. It is dazzling white by day and used as a canvas for a rainbow of spectacular light displays at night, providing a brilliant entrance to the marvels that await the guest inside. Combining the latest technology with a long-standing reputation for the ultimate Arabian hospitality, Burj Al Arab symbolizes the very essence of Dubai, embracing the best of the new alongside traditions of the past.

The interior design is as impressive as the exterior. Inspired by earth, air, fire and water Khuan Chew, of KCA International, used a vibrant colour palette including 1,590 metres of 24-carat gold leaf to embellish the incredible interior. At 180 metres, the world's tallest atrium is abundant in warm, natural light and flanked by golden columns and a central fountain where arches of water burst over 42 metres into the air.

THE PALACE, DUBAI

Part of The Old Town Island, The Palace, The Old Town has an excellent view of the record-breaking Burj Khalifa, with which it shares a large manmade lake that is home to The Dubai Fountain, yet the two experiences could not be more dissimilar. Created as a modern re-imagining of ancient Arabian life, The Old Town Island emphasises the personal over the public and low-rises over the high-rise buildings which are so common today. Its array of winding streets and lively market squares stand in wonderfully marked contrast to the orderly, vertical arrangement found in most modern lifestyle complexes. In this spirit, The Palace, The Old Town possesses a commanding palatial presence truly worthy of its name.

Seamlessly blending past and present, the property integrates symmetrical arches, high ceilings, open courtyards, and enchanting terraces, all fronted by a classic Middle-Eastern facade that belies the richly appointed interiors and wealth of modern conveniences within.

Rooms

Every one of the 161 rooms and 81 suites offers a charming Arabian atmosphere and a level of comfort worthy of the world's most opulent city. Utilising fine materials such as silk, with furnishings and woodwork that embrace traditional lattices and motifs, the rich, tactile environments communicate a sense of place that matches the view beyond their windows. As an upgrade to the standard deluxe rooms, some of the suites come with a range of services suited to business travellers, including airport transfers, Business Lounge access, a dedicated butler service upon request and a unique check-in policy allowing guests to keep their room/suite for a full 24-hours. The rooms are also equipped with flat-screen televisions, wireless Internet and even a voicemail service.
